Headcanon

hot4sirius:

Hey guys, I have a question for you (it’s actually for my graduation thesis):

Does a headcanon have to be cannon compliant?

Better yet: If an idea goes directly against cannon, can it still be called a headcanon?

I’ve seen people argue that yes, it has to be, but at the same time I see many people using it differently, and I’m trying to define this concept so please help me.

For example, would you say the word is being used correctly if I were to say “I headcanon that Sirius never went to Azkaban and instead raised Harry”? Can you use a headcanon to express an AU idea?

Don’t be afraid to give long answers. Thank you very much for your help ❤ We need more academic research in fan studies. Feel free to answer by reblogging, commenting or sending me DMs, and if you’d like to help me more please reblog and ask your followers to answer as well.

(My thesis is about how fans create and share Harry Potter headcanons on Tumblr, and one of my goals is to propose an official definition for the word headcanon)

Bad idea for a Romantic Comedy
The Chief of Police is married to a Mob Boss, and they have to keep “just failing” to catch each other. When one of them hits the other in a shootout, it’s followed with “Oh I’m never going to hear the end of this…”

“So how was your day at work?”
“YOU FUCKING SHOT ME! THAT WAS MY DAY AT WORK!”

We clearly have different definitions of bad.

Death comes for Minerva McGonagall.

It comes for her, as it came for her husband, so many years ago.
It comes for her, as it came for her Headmaster, the price of his ambition.
It comes for her, as it came for far too many of her friends and students, in one war then another.

Death comes for her.

Minerva McGonagall Looks at Death, and raises an eyebrow.

Death pauses, then nods and backs away.
“We’ll call this number three then, shall we?”

She smiles as she turns back to her paperwork.
There is a reason her animagus form is a cat.

Single best thing ever in my life have I ever read about my one true babe Minnie.
