Well if any of your drafts get flagged by the new system, a mod can apparently see them in with all your other flagged posts, and if they un-flag them, it publishes them automatically as a brand new post. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Sounds drastic. Especially for content creators who may still need Tumblr for commissions while they find an alternative.

If you can swing it, here’s why:

I suspect that the December 17th deadline is so that Verizon/Yahoo can clean house and make Tumblr appealing to investors. This is a Q4/Q1 fire sale kind of thing. It makes a certain amount of business sense to make this change. Human-lead content curation (e.g. separating the CP from the legit) is expensive and time-consuming. I doubt they have the money for it. They already sold off Flickr. As a long-time Flickr pro user, I’m not pleased by the change and increase in pro account price, but I get it.

Investors are looking for a user base. User base is a prime attraction for investment or buy-out for a social media platform or application (I speak from experience as a co-founder of Rhinobird.tv).

Every account that is cancelled will be one less account in Tumblr’s user base for their pitch. I assume that there are millions of accounts with some percentage simply being abandoned accounts that haven’t been used in years. So cancelling one’s account on the way out the door won’t really matter unless the number of cancelled accounts reaches several hundred thousand at least.

If you decide to leave and cancel, then I also recommend sending a polite message to Tumblr staff, or tweet to the account about why you are leaving.

Finally, using Twitter to voice your concerns and thoughts about this issue will increase its visibility. They ain’t gonna like that. Media outlets that cater to tech entrepreneurs, and Silicon Valley types are going to be all over this.

So I’ll probably make a bigger post later. But just like the majority of folks here, I’m a tad salty about the fucking shitstorm that Tumblr is right now. In all honesty, more sad than salty.

I don’t have a lot of content right now, nothing compared to the years of work that some folks have put in to this community. A lot of their work is affected by these new guidelines. Things like masterposts and searching for old content is moot because of posts that have been flagged and are now hidden. I can’t imagine the type of headache this is for everyone who has invested so much time and energy into their page. It makes sense for people to want to jump ship, find a new platform and peace the fuck out. I don’t blame you.

I have met fantastic folks through here and my only hope is that either Tumblr gets their shit together, or something else surfaces that allows for fandoms to continue thriving like it has here, without scrutiny for the type of content that’s being posted.

I just think ya’ll are real cool and I’d like to stay friends.

I do have other social media platforms, though they aren’t exclusively HP-related (I was doing my best to keep things separated, but jokes on me). I’ll probably post them later down the road, but feel free to DM me if you want to follow me elsewhere before I make them public knowledge.

I’ll continue posting here in the meantime. It’s a pain in the ass, but the optimist in me is hoping that between now and the 17th, maybe Tumblr will realize that they fucked up and tweak all this new shit they’re trying to implement.
