Setting Things Right

Dumbledore looked up in mild surprise as the door to his office slammed open revealing a very irate Minerva McGonagall on the other side. “Well good evening to you too Minerva, was there something I could help you with?” He greeted before returning his attention to the parchment in front of him.

“Oh, you will help alright Albus, because if you don’t I will be leaving this school.” Minerva seethed, her magic prickling through the air. “I just went and checked on Harry, he is getting pulled out of the Dursleys home tonight and you are going down to the Ministry to provide evidence that Sirius was not the Potter’s secret keeper.”

Setting his quill to the side Dumbledore gave Minerva his full attention. “We’ve talked about this before. It will be useful to have Harry safe with family, and the only way to do that is to make sure Sirius cannot step in and activate his rights as his magical guardian.”

“Those lines you fed me two years ago when we handed a baby over to the muggles won’t fly any longer, Albus!” Minerva snapped before taking a breath to calm her magic. “His loving family is keeping a three-year-old starving and in a closet barely big enough for a pair of shoes, much less a living child.”

Albus had the grace to look ashamed in the face of Minerva’s anger, but he did not change his stance. “I feared something like that may happen. From what I remember of Vernon and Petunia they were very anti-magic the one time I got to meet them. Still, there are protections he gets from being around his family that he cannot get any other way.”

Pulling a sheath of papers from inside her robes, Minerva walked over and dropped the scrolls in front of Albus. “Those are requests from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang for me to join their staff in the fall. If you don’t fix this tonight Albus then I will and it will be the last thing I do before I leave your company for good.”

“Now Minerva, I’m sure we can discuss this like adults.” Dumbledore pressed quietly.

“No Albus, I’m done talking. Either you make a Wizards Oath to fix this tonight or I’m leaving.”

Dumbledore studied the woman in front of him for a moment before nodding solemnly and picking up his wand. “I, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, swear on my magic to go to the Minister tonight and start the proceedings to get Sirius freed from Azkaban so Harry can be returned to his rightful place in Sirius’ home.”

Minerva watched Albus’ magic flare around his hand before settling in a faint shimmering band around his wrist. Once that was done she nodded coldly at him, “I’m glad you made the right choice. Now I am going to collect Harry from those awful muggles and take him home to stay with me and Lucile until Sirius can come to collect him. And while I’m at it I will send Remus an owl inviting him for tea, he deserves to hear the full story before it gets out through other sources.”

“That is probably for the best.” Dumbledore sighed, taking off his glasses to rub at the bridge of his nose. “I will send an owl over once I have finished at the Ministry.”

Without another word to Albus Minerva nodded and spun on her heel to step into the fireplace, tossing a handful of floo powder in front of her as she shouted Loch Loyal Manor and disappeared.
