james is the one who knows lily is pregnant before either one of them really want to admit it.

its not unusual for her to get sick after a bad battle, especially when there are young victims involved. but she keeps waking up to vomit in the mornings, claiming she’s still not over what bellatrix did to the orphanage. he’s not either, so they let that slide.

and its not unusual for her avoid eating, but now she’s getting nauseous at the smell of food and complaining about it. lily doesnt complain when she doesnt eat. she hopes it goes unnoticed. 

and its not unusual for her to miss her periods. really, lily rarely gets them. between the stab wound in the abdomen and the stress of the war, they never thought it was possible to come near conceiving.

but there’s that suspicion he has that just wont die down, and he knows she feels it too. so it’s james who brings her the clear vial of potion thats meant to change color on her stomach if shes pregnant, and its james who already has the nausea remedy ready for when it turns that fateful purple color. 

it’s both of them who cry, though, the strangest mix of dread and joy that either of them have (or ever would) experienced before
