The Marauders (and Lily) and Alcohol

I had to think of this for a few stories I’m outlining and decided to post my new little head canons.

James

• Gets the worst hangovers because he mixes his liquors all the time.

• Tells everyone around him how much he loves them when he’s drunk. Really, he gets so lovey when he’s drunk that he once said “Snivellus isn’t so bad” after getting blackout drunk, although he claims not to remember it.

• Really likes dark, bitter beers, which strikes everyone who knows him as a little odd though no one can say why.

• Once laughed so hard firewhisky came out his nose and burned his nostril hairs to a crisp.

• Has the palate of a troll when it comes to wine. He can barely tell a red from a white, and it drives Sirius crazy.

• Totally the lightweight of the bunch.

• Also the Mom-Friend who sobers up quickly if any of his friends get into trouble. (He’s usually the one who holds Lily’s and/or Sirius’s hair back when they have to puke.)

Remus

• Loses his swear filter after his second drink and can barely form a sentence without using at least one curse word.

• Wine makes him sleepy, like dozing off after half a glass kind of sleepy.

• Likes beer and ales just fine, but usually prefers the lagers, pilsners, and other light or fruity beers over darker, heavier stouts and porters.

• Prefers to drink his hard alcohols slow and straight. No ice and no mixers.

• His sweet tooth extends to alcohol, and he really enjoys liqueurs, especially the sweet, fruity ones.

• Usually knows his limits and stops before he gets too drunk…usually.

• When he does get drunk it’s a coin flip whether he’ll get very relaxed and a little touchy-feely, or if he’ll get anxious and philosophical.

Peter

• He mostly drinks beer because he thinks he should (and it’s usually what James is drinking), but he really loves cocktails, the fancier the better.

• Would have made a really good bartender because he’s got a good sense for mixing cocktails.

• Is actually allergic to wine.

• A happy, hungry drunk.

• Great at drinking games, so good that James claims if they could give Peter a few shots before every game he’d not only make the Quidditch team but be utterly unstoppable in any position.

• His confidence goes through the roof after his third drink.

• Has never puked from drinking, an accomplishment he’s very proud of.

Sirius

• Actually prefers bottom-shelf firewhisky to the expensive stuff for nostalgia’s sake.

• However, he’s an absolute snob when it comes to wine.

• Tolerates beer because his friends like it and he thinks it fits his image, but he secretly thinks it’s plebeian.

• A maudlin, melodramatic drunk prone to trying to kiss people and singing very loudly and very badly.

• Will start getting naked at a rate of one article of clothing per drink starting after his fourth drink.

• Has burned his eyebrows off while lighting drinks on fire on three separate occasions.

• His friends share a mild concern that he might use alcohol as an emotional crutch sometimes.

Lily

• Inhibitions go out the window after about three or four drinks.

• Gets very competitive when drunk. Will accept any challenge and won’t back down for anything.

• Has tried to start at least two bar fights (The first time Sirius had to buy a round for the entire pub to keep the peace, and the second time James had to literally carry her out of the bar over his shoulder).

• Sirius’s wine protégé.

• Unabashedly loves fruity, tropical drinks.

• Does not handle hangovers well. Not. At. All.
